Information for applicants

How to Apply

You may start your application at any time on MySymposium and return to edit and submit prior to the deadline. You will be asked to provide information about yourself, any co-presenters, your research mentors, and your project. You will also have the opportunity to apply for the CarverNext Research Recognition Awards.

Co-Presenters

For group presentations, the primary presenter should submit co-presenters’ information during the application process. Co-presenters will receive and email to verify that they are part of the group. Note that only the primary presenter may edit or submit the application.

Student Research Mentors

If you are a student applicant, you will need to enter the names and email addresses for your research mentor(s). The application requires that at least one mentor is a faculty member or postdoctoral researcher.

Project Information

Work with your mentor to review your abstract and title before submitting. An abstract is a summary of your research usually presented in skeletal form, which concentrates on the essentials of a larger idea or claim. Your abstract should include sufficient information for reviewers to judge the nature and significance of your research, the adequacy of the methodology employed, and the nature of the results and/or progress to date. We strongly recommend that you attend an abstract writing workshop to help you get started. If you cannot attend in person, you may come to Drop-In advising to gain additional information and guidance.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts must be no longer than 300 words in length. For your convenience, we have provided a word count in the abstract in the abstract editing box in your application.
You may write and edit your abstract in the online application system. Your application account will allow you to edit your abstract as often as you like prior to final submission.

PLEASE NOTE:Your abstract will be published in the Symposium Proceedings. Therefore, you should submit a high quality version approved by your faculty mentor.

Session Type

You may apply to present your research as a poster, oral presentation, performing arts presentation, or in the visual arts and design showcase.

Poster

The poster should include a statement of the idea investigated, a description of the method or approach used, findings or progress to date, and a summary. Size requirements for posters is 40″ wide x 32″ tall. Please note: your posters should not be free-standing, easels will be provided at the event.

Oral Presentation

Oral presentations are 10 minutes in length. This time limit is strictly enforced. Your presentation should be tailored to an educated, non-field expert audience and may be accompanied by a visual slide show, handouts, live demonstrations, performance, or audience participation.

Performing Arts

Submissions for this session must have a performance based component (e.g. music, theater, or dance). The Performing Arts Session will take place in Mary Gates Hall.

Visual Arts and Design

Submissions for this session must be art forms created as part or as a result of the research process. Submissions may include paintings, drawings, printing, sculpture, architectural models, digital arts, experimental media, jewelry, textiles, photography/film, mixed media, and more. Exhibitors are required to present on the day of Symposium. Submissions in this category will be displayed in Odegaard Undergraduate Library for two weeks beginning on Symposium day.
